How to Select Right Brewery Pump and Maintain Them
You can find the application of sanitary pump in beer factories where viscous and non-viscous liquids are handled during the process of beer manufacturing. Therefore, in such process it is essential that proper selection of pump is necessary and also it must be properly maintained so that it can offer best performance.
These sanitary pumps are usually divided in two different types:
- Centrifugal pump
In centrifugal pump, it will transfer the kinetic or centrifugal energy into the form of liquid and create a velocity and pressure.
You will find such centrifugal pumps in most of the breweries and there are number of different types of centrifugal pumps available which is open impeller, multi-stage, liquid ring and submersible type. For transferring non-viscous liquids at a high volume and also relatively at low pressure centrifugal pumps are the best option.
- Positive displacement
Here measured amount of liquid will be transferred from the inlet to outlet for each stroke or rotation of the pump. Most commonly used such kind of pumps in brewery factories are flexible impeller, positive rotary, air operated diaphragm pump and progressive cavity. This kind of pumps are best for transferring thick liquids.
How to select any centrifugal pump
Depending upon the physical layout of the total system, difference of elevation between destination and fluid source, and the pipe diameter the actual flow rate of any centrifugal pump will be achieved. Therefore, while selecting the pump, it is necessary to check net positive section head and the necessary power required in order to drive the pump. In order to produce proper rate of flow for any kind of physical environment any positive displacement pump will be needed.
- Selection of size
In order to find the right size of centrifugal pump it is necessary to decide the rate of flow first. In any brewery process the pipe diameter is very important factor to decide flow rate.
- Determine the total head
In order to decide static head, you need to find difference between height of fluid surface of the surface tank and discharge tank.
- Pump power
Power required is decided by using the following formulae:
Pump power = total differential head x flow rate x acceleration due to gravity x liquid density / pump efficiency
- Select pump
Select pump based on the catalog of the manufacturer.
Pump maintenance must be regularly performed with regular inspection of the operation and also checking the leaks and noises etc. You also need to check the oil level regularly.
