In between the measurement, the weight acts on the metal spring element of the load cell and causes an elastic deformation. This strain is then transformed into an electric signal by an SG or a strain gauge that is equipped on the spring element. The easiest kind of load cell is a bending beam that comes with a strain gauge. Many times, the mandatory yet basic components mean, the spring element and the strain gauge are complemented with extra elements like housing, sealing elements etc. that protects the strain gauge elements.
Single bending beam loading cell
The bending beam load cells are the most ideal for many measuring tasks. In this case, the signal relies on the bending moment. When the load application point in the bending beam is longitudinal, then the direction tends to change with the similar loads and varied signals are generated. Because of this, the single bending beam is quite rarely used in the load cells as it needs special measures to make sure that there is a constant application point.
Multiple bending beam loading cells
These are usually used as the spring elements for loads ranging more than 5 tons. This mainly uses two or three bending beams. They are paired through rigid elements on the clamping and on the load application side. This robust coupling creates a purely vertical shift of the load application point and an S shaped deformation. This is less sensitive in nature to load application point shifts rather than a single bending beam. That deformation evokes positive and negative strain zones on the surface which are way near to each other and facilitate the strain gauge installation and wiring.
