Expanded Polystyrene foam refers to the plastic material featuring special properties owing to its structure. It comprises individual cells with low polystyrene density and EPF is light extraordinarily that it can support its own weight many times in water.
The cells are disconnected and so the heat does not travel easily through EPF, this makes it a great insulator. EPF is employed in insulation, floatation devices, egg cartons, flats to produce sandwich, meat, and hamburger boxes, plates, coffee cups, picnic coolers, and peanut packaging. Generally, it is called Styrofoam and it refers to a hard type, blue EPF mainly used in boating.
Initially, researchers sought materials to make carriage windshields, film, and other small items such as combs in plastics made from chemicals and natural substances. These plastics used natural tendency resulting in polymerization, such that two or more small molecules come together to form long chains. These molecular chains or polymers comprise of structural units and the common natural polymers are cellulose forming a primary plant cell walls component, paper, cotton, and rayon.
What is Polystrene
The best known polystyrene is the synthetic polymers that include polypropylene, Polyethylene, and polyester. The hydrocarbon liquid, the Styrene that is used to make EPF was derived in the 19th century late from storax balsam that is a tree known as the Oriental sweet gum in Asia. In the same time, synthetic plastics were formed form hydrocarbons and the structure was conducive to polymerization. Thus in 1938, the polymer, Polystyrene was invented such that using which EPF is made.
Initially, polystyrene was mainly used in flotation and insulation devices for life preservers, boats, and buoys. Only after EPF replaced paper, the other packaging protection became popular. Thus, the familiarity gained popularity with the growth of the takeout and fast food industries that started using in burger boxes the EPF and also in coffee cups. In fact, the EPF today is plastic most recognized.
The process of manufacturing
However, owing to this popularity of EPF and its unique features, Polystyrene machinery production gained importance. The Polystyrene is a process combining benzene and ethylene. it is combined with water and a substance to form polystyrene droplets. These droplets form chains turning into beads. These are cleaned and filtered to make EPF small cell such that the workers then melt, include blowing agent and the beads are extruded. Producing EPF smooth-skinned means the beads are pre-expanded, thus the density is dramatically reduced. Next they heat and expand so that they harden on cooling and are given the shape desired.
